On a 5,600 m² site overlooking the Nile, this museum symbolizes the important role of the river in the prosperous life of the population. Its facade is modeled after the temple of Seti I in Abydos. The two-story museum houses an antiquities collection of some 7,000 pieces excavated from various sites in the governorate, as well as a number of rare mummies. It displays the history of the pharaohs who came from Sohag and the religious traditions of the time, including the pilgrimage to Abydos. The museum also contains a section dedicated to the cultural traditions, crafts and industries of Sohag. It was inaugurated by President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi on August 12, 2018.
