The ancient island of Philea was a sacred center for the cult of Isis and the site of a large temple complex known today as the Temple of Philea. For thousands of years, the island of Philea attracted pilgrims from around the world and remained a pagan center of worship even after the arrival and spread of Christianity. After the construction of the Aswan Dam and Lake Nasser, Philea Island was flooded and eventually completely submerged. The flooding prompted the initiative UNESCO, to preserve the magnificent temple of Philea. It was dismantled and moved to Agilkia Island, which was renamed Philea Island.
