At first glance, the Mausoleum of the Agha Khan at Aswan may seem to you an austere and isolated building on the west bank of the Nile. Inspired by the architecture of the Cairo Fatimids, the building stands out for its elegance and the particular use of pink granite. It was built at the request of the Begum, wife of the Aga Khan who died in 1957 III. The Begum – who passed away in 2000 – lived in the white villa below, but closed the mausoleum to the public in 1997 to allow the deceased to rest in peace away from the hustle and bustle of the living. Nevertheless, the site is more than worth a visit, whether for the serenity of the place or for the breathtaking panoramas of the Nile and the villa below.
