Lake Qarun has been a source of fish and a habitat for water birds since time immemorial. The main water source of the lake is the drainage of agricultural land, which enters the lake through two large drains called el-Batts and el-Wadi. This water has increasingly increased in salinity with the intensification of agriculture and is now saltier than seawater. Freshwater fish and invertebrates have largely disappeared and marine species have been introduced. This lake is of international importance for wintering waterfowl, including black-necked grebes, Podiceps nigricollis , and spoonbills, Anas clypeata . You can spend a fruitful day in el-Fayoum (1h30 drive from Cairo) and visit the numerous ancient sites, including the small but excellent museum.
