The Karnak Temple Complex houses three main temples, several smaller enclosed temples, and a series of outer temples that combine the achievements of many. generations of ancient builders over a period of 1500 years. Some thirty different pharaohs contributed to. the construction of this site, allowing it to achieve a size, complexity and diversity not found anywhere else. After all, it was the holiest site of the New Kingdom.
The ancient complex covers a total area of 2 square kilometres, and its name. \”Karnak\” means \”fortified settlement\” in Arabic. The Temple of Amun, the main building of the. complex, is the largest place of worship ever built. It is surrounded by two other gigantic temples dedicated to Amun’s wife Mut and his son Khonsu, respectively. Although Karnak appears heavily destroyed today, there are still many features that make it one of the largest and most impressive ancient sites in Egypt.
