Gilf El-Kebir is a sandstone plateau located in the southwest corner of the western desert. The rocky surface slopes are partially covered with sand as the Great Sand Sea gradually encroaches on the plateau to the north. The area is extremely dry, but is home to wild sheep known as weedans, several species of reptiles, and small birds such as the ubiquitous white-capped wheatear. In the area you will find ancient petroglyphs that testify to a completely different environment in prehistoric times and show numerous images of different types of large livestock.
