The catacombs of Kom el-Shouqafa were originally built for a single wealthy family that practiced a mixture of ancient Egyptian, Greek and Roman religion and housed over 300 mummies. See bearded serpents crowned with the crowns of Upper and Lower Egypt, the floating sun disk above the archway, and the usual deities of the dead combined with Greco-Roman motifs. The catacombs are a monumental testimony to the myths of ancient Egypt that persisted despite centuries of Greek and Roman rule. Kom el-Shoqqafa literally means “heap of scraps” It was discovered in 1900 by pure chance, when a cart pulled by a donkey fell into a pit. Opening hours: 09:00- 17:00.
