Near Bab al-Futuh, at the beginning of Al-Mo’ez Street, you will find one of the largest Fatimid mosques in Cairo: the Al-Hakim Mosque. The notoriously eccentric caliph Al-Hakim Bi-Amr Allah had it built in 990 AD. Towards the end of his reign, he disappeared without a trace at the age of 36. Since then, the mosque was used as a warehouse and elementary school before being converted into a mosque in 1980. The most impressive features of the sanctuary are its minarets, the oldest “surviving” minarets in all of Cairo, and the spectacular entrance to the mosque, which resembles a propylon, more of an ancient Egyptian architectural feature.l-Azhar Mosque
