The Aswan Museum was originally the villa of Sir William Willcocks, the architect of the ancient Aswan Dam. It was converted into a museum to display the archeological remains found during the construction of the dam and the artifacts discovered on Elephantine Island. These include Nubian artifacts such as statues of Amenhotep III and ancient Egyptian deities, especially Khnum, who is depicted as a ram’s head, as well as mummies of rams, the symbol of Khnum. The museum also displays funerary paintings, basins made of slate from the prehistoric period, weapons and pottery recovered during excavations in the Nubian areas threatened by the construction of the dam. It is a tribute to the culture and history of Nubia, dating back to the prehistoric era. The museum, modeled after traditional Nubian village architecture and built of local sandstone and pink granite, was one of the winners of the Aga Khan Award for Architecture in 2001.
