About 50 km southwest of Alexandria is the small village of Abu-Mina, where the monastery of St. Mena (Mina) is located. Saint Mena is believed to have fallen as a martyr in the early 4th century when the Roman Empire was persecuting Christians. A modern monastery was built on the site of an ancient church where the saint’s remains are believed to be buried. A German team of archaeologists has been working in Abu Mina since 1969. Buses run regularly from the new Alexandria train station (Baheej Station) to Abu Mina. Once in Abu-Mina, you can take a microbus to get to the monastery.
