Located at the southern end of the Great Sand Sea in Egypt’s Western Desert, the Quartz Field is an amazing geological wonder. Very close to the Libyan border, the amazing gem-like pieces of yellow-green colour were discovered, which are not found anywhere else on earth. The exact origin of this tektite material is still unknown. Scientists speculate that it is the result of a meteorite impact that must have occurred centuries ago, melting the sand due to the intense heat. However, no crater has yet been found to confirm this theory. The glass is carried by the wind and feels polished; it was used by the pharaohs to make jewellery. When you visit the quartz glass field, resist the temptation to take some of the shiny desert pieces with you. This field is accessible as part of safaris and tours of the Great Sand Sea.
