Built on an ancient Egyptian site, Balat is a charming Islamic mediaeval village about 35 km from Mut. About 1.5 km away is Qila Al-Dabba, the ancient necropolis of Balat, which consists of five mastabas, one of which has been restored and is open to the public. On one of the tombs, an inscription was found that says in hieroglyphics that the governor of the oasis [who lies in this tomb] is the most powerful desert leader.
