The Ibn-Tulun Mosque, which looks more like a fortress with its imposing wall full of beautiful jags, is probably the oldest mosque in Cairo and the largest mosque in the city with an area of 26,300 square metres. The mosque was built by Ibn Tulun in the 9th century and served as the centre of the capital of the Tulun dynasty. The beauty of the building and its surroundings can best be admired from the spiral minaret, which Ibn Tulun was inspired by his native Iraq, where such a minaret towers over the city’s ancient mosque in Samarra.
