Mosque-Al-Rifa’i> is one of the largest mosques in Cairo. It took 43 years to build this beautiful sanctuary that combines different Islamic architectural styles. It is located in the “Midan Al-Qalaa\” or Citadel Square and is opposite the Mosque-Madrassa of Sultan Hassan, with which it rivals in size and magnificence. Many members of the Egyptian royal family rest in this mosque, including the last king, King Farouk. The last Shah of Iran was also buried in this mosque in 1980. Be sure to look for the ornamental window grilles and the breathtakingly high ceiling supported by 44 colossal columns.
