Nestled in a large circular bay and protected from the high seas by a series of rocks that form a natural breakwater, Marsa-Matrouh is a relatively secluded destination on Egypt’s Mediterranean coast. It is the capital of Matrouh Governorate, which stretches from the 61st km of the Alexandria-Matrouh highway to the Egyptian-Libyan border (450 km of coastline), from east to west, and from the coast 350 km deep into Egypt’s western desert, including the Siwa Oasis.
With long white sand beaches and crystal clear waters, such as Agiba Beach and Gharam Beach, considered by many to be some of the most beautiful coastal scenery in the world, many believe that Cleopatra herself bathed in the calm waters of Marsa Matrouh. The colour of the water ranges from blue to green, which is due to the different depths in Matrouh Bay. The irregular seabed forms an amazing underwater world with mountains, valleys and colourful fish species.
Marsa Matrouh is located in the northwestern corner of Egypt, where Erwin Rommel, the Desert Fox himself, chose a cave near the coast to direct operations during the Battle of El-Alamein. Rommel’s cave still exists, it has been transformed into a “Rommel Museum” that you can visit today.
