Since the opening of the international airport in 2001, Marsa Alam city has become a popular destination on the Red Sea for diving enthusiasts. Nestled between the sea and the desert, the town offers all types of accommodations, from upscale comfort lodges with all Western amenities to Bedouin-inspired eco-lodges. The dive sites accessible from Marsa Alam are among the most attractive in the Red Sea for experienced divers. Healthy coral reefs and a diverse underwater world with dugongs and dolphins are the main attractions of Marsa Alam. For less experienced divers, the offshore coral reefs are the ideal place for hours of marine life observation. The new marina Port Ghalib in Marsa Alam gives the place a very exclusive reputation with its luxurious hotels, resorts and berths for about 1000 yachts. The newly built marina offers some of the best relaxation and entertainment facilities on the Red Sea coast, including gourmet restaurants and enticing spas. The resort is also home to the International Convention Centre, the only state-of-the-art multi-purpose centre of its size on the Red Sea. The centre offers 1,950 square metres of meeting space that can host any event, from large conventions with 2,000 delegates to informal small-group gatherings. Marsa Alam is also a world-renowned destination for kitesurfers and an ideal base for safaris and wildlife exploration. In ancient times, gold and emeralds were mined in the surrounding mountains – today you can visit some of these old mines. The place is located 274 km south of Hurghada city. The pleasant climate makes it a great holiday spot. The temperatures reach up to 31 °C in winter and in summer they are between 20 and 35 °C. The nearby Gebel Elba and Wadi al Gimal national parks are home to an impressive variety of birds and desert animals. Marsal Alam is also known as a health resort. Whether you are interested in the beach, the desert, the reefs or a combination of sightseeing and activities, Marsa Alam will suit you.
