A short visit to the Mahmoud Said Museum in Alexandria will transport you to the 1940s and 1950s, the golden era of Egypt’s 20th century and a time when Mahmoud Said, after retiring from his duties as a judge, began to paint Egypt as he saw it, mixing some echoes of the past with modern techniques such as cubism and social realism. The museum is housed in the artist’s beautiful Italian-style villa and exhibits some 40 paintings by Said.
