Currency

The national currency of Egypt is the Egyptian Pound, which comes in denominations of 1, 5, 10, 20, 50, 100 and 200 pounds (Geneh). The smaller denominations, both in coin and paper form, are 25 and 50 piasters (ersh), with 100 piasters to 1 Egyptian pound.
The currency features images of the country’s ancient and rich heritage, including Ramses II on the 50-piaster bill and the temples of Abu Simbel on the 1-pound bill.
Cash is readily available throughout the country. There are currency exchange offices in almost every hotel and at the airport, as well as banks that are easy to find with a simple Google search.
There is a foreign currency limit of approximately $10,000 (or equivalent) and a local currency limit of 5,000 Egyptian pounds that can be brought into or out of the country.

Customs

When entering the Arab Republic of Egypt, travelers should note the following:
– Each traveler may only carry a maximum of one liter of alcoholic beverages and 200 cigarettes, 25 cigars or 200 grams of tobacco.
– Goods from duty-free stores costing no more than $200 within one month of arrival may be exempt from customs duty along with all personal effects, provided they are for personal use.
– All firearms, including sporting weapons, narcotics, drugs, cotton and poultry are prohibited
– Valuable items purchased in Egypt, such as gold and silver, can only be exported in small quantities if it is clear that they are for personal use.
– If a traveler is carrying his or her pet, a government-certified health certificate is required and may be subject to additional inspection by local veterinarians.
