North of the White Desert, the Black Desert is closer to Bahariya than to Farafra; about 50 km south of Bawiti. The mountains have eroded and covered the desert with a layer of black powder and stones, giving it its name. Towards the end of the Black Desert are black volcanic hills that long ago erupted a dark volcanic material called dolerite, which makes up the black rocks. Climb English Mountain, the highest point in the Black Desert, and you will be rewarded with a breathtaking view of the strange landscape. You can see the Black Desert by crossing the road from Bahariya to Farafra, but if you want to venture into the depths of the desert, a guide is advisable. Tours can be easily arranged from Bahariya or Farafra.
