Al-Aqmar Mosque is a rather small mosque, but it makes up for its size with its architectural and historical significance. Located near the Al-Qalawun complex, Al-Aqmar Mosque is one of the few remaining Fatimid mosques in Cairo. It was the first mosque in Cairo to have an ornate facade, and also the first to have its floor plan adapted to the street plan. Admire the intricate and filigree carvings and patterns on the walls, facade and minaret of this truly beautiful mosque built in 1125. The name of the mosque means “moonlit” in Arabic and refers to the way its walls shimmer in the moonlight.
