The Mallawi Museum - Tourism

14 December 2022

Mallawi Museum was inaugurated during the era of the late President Gamal Abdel Nasser on June 23, 1962, and houses antiques from different eras. The city of Mallawi in Minya is known for its wealth of ancient Egyptian artifacts, especially the archeological sites of Al Ashmunin and Tunah al-Jabal. Mallawi witnessed the fall of Pharaonic, Greek and Roman civilizations, prompting the construction of the museum to preserve Egyptian heritage. The two-story museum consists of four wings displaying the artifacts of Tunah al-Jabal, Al Ashmunin, Mir and Amarna. Visitors can trace the history of the city through the extensive collection of antiquities from the ancient Egyptian, Amarna, Roman and Greek periods. In 2011 and 2013, the museum was looted. It was reopened on September 22, 2016, after 900 of the original 1,003 artifacts were recovered.
