On the western side of Sinai is one of the rare traces left by the ancient Egyptians on the peninsula. The Serabit el Khadem Temple of Hathor is located in the rocky mountain landscape amidst an ancient turquoise mining settlement that provided the pharaohs with beautiful stones used to make ornaments, jewelry and blue paint. You can see the miners’ huts and the engravings they left on the walls, including pictures of the ships that transported the stones to the Nile Valley. Reaching the temple is an adventure. You will take a 4×4 safari to get to the site, followed by a short hike. The temple is an example of how the pharaohs improved their structures over the course of each dynasty. It is a beautiful and fascinating site with a stunning backdrop.
