Located at the lower end of Rhoda Island in Cairo, the Nilometer was used in earlier times to measure the level of the river. The structure consists of a gauge or measuring column located below the Nile level and accessed by steps that wind around the chamber containing the column. When the water level was too low, the Cairens expected drought and famine; when it was too high, they could predict floods and disasters. The Nilometer is no longer functional today, but it is worth a visit. It was built in 861 AD by the Muslim caliph Al-Mutawakkil and is topped by an interesting pointed dome that was rebuilt after being destroyed by French invaders. The interior of the building is breathtaking
