Located near Bab Zuweila in Cairo, this mosque has an interesting history. The founder, a Mamluk sultan, was imprisoned in this place and suffered greatly. He vowed that if he ever came to power, he would turn the prison into a school and mosque where intellectuals could study. After regaining his freedom, he did just that, transforming the prison into one of the most beautiful and expensive mosques and madrasas built in Cairo. Marble of all colours was brought from various places and used to decorate the walls, ceilings and floors in a beauty that will leave you amazed. The twin minarets of the mosque tower over Bab Zuweila and dominate the area. The mausoleums of the Sultan and his family are located in the mosque.
