Samak mashwy (grilled fish) is a typical experience for all visitors to the beautiful north coast of Egypt. If you are in the mood to catch murgan (grey mullet) and barbuni (red mullet), 525 km of azure Mediterranean coastline await you. These waters are also teeming with sea bass, red mullet, bluefish and sole. On the eastern side of the coast lies the bustling city of Alexandria. Alexandria’s seafront is lined with seafood restaurants, fishermen and boats bringing in the day’s catch. The favourite spots of Alexandria’s fishermen are the fishing port of Abu Qir (Abu Qir is a former small fishing village in the north of Alexandria), where you can fish, swim and sunbathe before feasting on fresh seafood.
