People

Egypt is a democratic republic with mixed ethnicities and is divided into. 26 governorates consisting of towns and villages. Currently, Egypt is home to about 90 million Egyptians, who
are (almost) evenly divided between urban and. rural residents and concentrated near the banks of the Nile in the major cities of Cairo, Luxor, Aswan, and. Port Said.

Egyptians are a very provincial people who have always had a deep attachment to their place. of origin, so much so that even those who live abroad always return to the same city where they previously. made a life for themselves. It is almost as if moving to another city is out of the question. This results in the. incomparable warmth and intangible “closeness” that exists between people in this country, even in times of hardship. A truly, unforgettably hospitable people.

Although Egypt, as the descendant of one of the world’s oldest. civilizations, has influenced and been influenced by thousands of years of civilization. A large and unfortunate part of this past consisted. of many conflicts ranging from Pharaonic. rule to Roman invasions to colonialism and war. This is reflected in the cultural diversity of the country: foreign languages such as English, French, German, Italian and Spanish are widely spoken in the. various social circles.

This is also true in almost all other. areas of life, where everything from cuisine to. art to literature is an amalgam of diversity, a remnant from foreign lands. This has allowed society to. appeal to a wide range of individuals regardless of class, from the religious to the exciting “party animal” The Egyptian people are constantly. evolving, challenged by the opposing forces of tradition and modernization.

Having survived for thousands of years as a major economi.c and political hub in the region, Egyptians themselves have become an amalgamation of the human. race and therefore see themselves differently. Although Egyptian minorities. consisting of Nubians, Bedouins, Turks, Greeks, and a few others, make up less than 5% of the Egyptian population. the other 95% of Egyptians are themselves only 17% Arab, as proven by sophisticated DNA analysis. In other words.

Egypt is as much a part of the world as the world is a part of Egypt. Perhaps an unconscious driving force behind the amazingly unique culture that Egyptians have built throughout their history is that Egyptians do not identify themselves. as Arabs, as their DNA does, but as something much more complex. As British officers noted at the time of colonial rule, the meaning of the Egyptian people is so deeply. ingrained in the core of the people that the Egyptian identity has remained impressively intact even after invasion by several countries; an identity that in some ways can be transferred to every corner of the world.
